Trying to lower your summertime energy bills? There’s no need to break a sweat. Conserving energy can be as easy as running a few fans, sealing the air leaks in your home and adjusting a few of your habits. Here are some easy ways to beat the heat without breaking the budget.
Use those fans
Ceiling and portable fans help you cool off without lowering the thermostat. As matter of fact, running a fan can allow you to turn up the thermostat a few degrees. Consider using the fan or fans only at night and early in the morning, when it isn’t as hot. Just remember, turn off the fan or fans when you leave the room. Leaving a fan on is just a waste of energy.
While you’re at it, consider getting an attic fan. An attic fan pulls the hot, stuffy air out of this space and replaces it with cooler outside air. This can dramatically lessen the amount of heat that’s radiating through the ceiling and into your living space.
Seal those leaks
Sealing the air leaks in your home can significantly reduce the flow of hot and muggy outside air into your nicely cooled home. Look around the envelope of your home for cracks, both large and small, and seal them with caulk or expanding foam. Seal drafty doors and windows with weatherstripping.
Change your ways
Run heat-producing appliances at night or early in the morning. Use a a slow cooker or microwave instead of the stove. Running the kitchen fan when you cook will exhaust the heat and humidity. Run the fans in your bathroom when you shower.
Having your cooling system serviced regularly also helps you conserving energy. A system that’s running efficiently uses less energy.
